Asiel Farms started in 1987 in the green hills of Kagera, Tanzania, where fertile land meets the shores of Lake Victoria. Mr. Asiel, who worked as a logistics officer at the National Milling Corporation, dreamed of starting his own farm. With experience in supply chains, he wanted to build a farm that could grow and support his community.

Kagera’s rich soil, good climate, and rainfall made it perfect for farming. Inspired by programs like the Kagera Livestock Development Programme (KALIDEP), Mr. Asiel decided to start with dairy farming. He bought a single Friesian crossbreed heifer named “Upendo” (Swahili for “love”). Upendo grazed on a small plot near Karagwe district. Even with challenges like tsetse flies, changing rains, and poor roads, Mr. Asiel used his skills to build simple shelters, find affordable feed, and care for the animals properly.

Word spread in nearby villages. By the early 1990s, Mr. Asiel had grown to five heifers and sold milk locally. He shared knowledge with other farmers about artificial insemination and pasture care. By 2000, the farm had 50 heifers, producing over 500 liters of milk daily for families, schools, and cities like Mwanza.In the mid-1990s, he planted coffee seedlings, intercropped with bananas to protect the soil. The high altitude and misty mornings helped produce high-quality Arabica beans.

Using sustainable farming techniques, the coffee thrived and brought premium prices.

The next generation brought modernization. Mr. Asiel’s son added a small milk processing plant, producing pasteurized milk, yogurt, and cheese, up to 1,000 liters daily. His daughter opened a coffee shop at the farm entrance, serving fresh coffee from their own beans with homemade pastries. Visitors from across Tanzania come to enjoy the view and products.

The farm also added poultry farming. Free-range chickens produce eggs, and broilers are raised for meat. Chicken manure fertilizes coffee plants, and leftover feed supports the flock. Today, the farm produces thousands of eggs and chickens weekly.

Asiel Farms is more than a business. It is a community hub. The farm hosts workshops, supports local farmers, uses solar irrigation, and partners with cooperatives for fair-trade coffee. It employs over 50 locals and donates milk to orphanages.

From one heifer to a thriving, diversified farm, Asiel Farms shows what hard work, innovation, and family support can achieve. Mr. Asiel says, “It started with love for the land and grew with the hands of my family and community.” The farm continues to inspire future generations to cultivate not just crops, but dreams.
